What Is The Tribulation?

The Tribulation is God's final wake-up call to a generation who has rejected Him.

What Is The Tribulation?

The Tribulation is a seven-year period of time that the Bible refers to as a "time of trouble" unlike anything this world has ever seen or will ever see again.

Daniel 12:1 says "and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time." The Bible calls the Tribulation by many descriptive names found in both the Old and New Testament including:

  • The Day of the Lord (1 Thessalonians 5:2)
  • The Hour of Trial (Revelation 3:10)
  • The Day of Wrath (Zephaniah 1:15)
  • The Time of Jacob's Trouble (Jeremiah 30:7)
  • The Wrath of the Lamb (Revelation 6:16)
  • And many more.

These seven years are divided into two 3 1/2 years periods with the last 3 1/2 years being the most horrific. There are many different events that occur throughout the Tribulation that will wreak havoc on the earth.

It will be a time of disease, famine, plague, death, war, judgment, persecution, deception, earthquakes, and widespread destruction. The world will experience the rise of the Antichrist, a false religion, a false peace, the abomination of desolation, Armageddon and much more. The world will also be full of evil and sin of every kind.

During the Tribulation, humankind will endure exactly twenty-one terrible judgments that extend the length of the seven years (Revelation chapters 6-19).

But even during this horrible time God shows His great mercy, kindness, and love...

This frightening time of Tribulation is God's final wake-up call to a generation who has rejected Him. God, in His longsuffering, is giving the world one last chance to turn away from sin and towards life in Christ. God is saying "Here I Am!" The world will have undeniable proof in the existence of God and will need to make a choice.

And it will work! During the Tribulation the world will experience an unheard of revival that will sweep the entire land. But it will also be a time of terrible judgment...

No war, plague, natural disaster or suffering since the beginning of time will even come close in comparison to the seven short years of the Tribulation.

We get an idea of just how deadly it will be when we realize that nearly fifty percent of the world population will die through only two of the judgments (Revelation 6:8; 9:15).

If we estimate using the approximately 8 billion people who are alive today, that would mean that billions of people would lose their life during the Tribulation.

After experiencing the terrible persecution and unimaginable calamities of the Tribulation, it is likely that only a small percentage will survive the entire seven years.

In fact, Jesus said that if the days were not shortened that no one would survive:

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.—(Matthew 24:21-22)

There are so many events that occur during this time that it is impossible to cover them in one question. The main point to remember is - you absolutely do not want to experience the Tribulation; and you don't have to--God has provided a way out called the Rapture.
